Young took personal charge of a 3-inch anti-aircraft gun before being blown overboard when the Arizona exploded. Young swam back to his ship and resumed command. The Vestal was afire and taking on water. Commander Young "with extreme coolness and calmness" moved his ship away from the Arizona and beached her to prevent the Vestal from sinking.
