He quarreled over military matters & slapped fellow officer George W. Baylor's face, calling him a liar, whereupon Baylor drew his revolver and shot him. Baylor was acquitted in 1868 and said the incident was a lifelong sorrow.

Wharton fought at Shiloh, Chickamauga and the Red River campaign

Bacon served in the 1st Texas Lancers during the Civil War
