Callahan County Courthouse - Aug. 8th, 2025

Visit the 1929 Callahan County Courthouse in Baird, Texas

The courthouse is being refurbished but the workers let me take photos

The County Seat was moved here in 1883 and this is the 4th courthouse

Callahan County residents who died fighting in the nation's wars

The cornerstone was dedicated on Armistice Day in 1929

Memorial to the Confederate soldiers of Camp Pecan, erected in 1963

County named for Ranger Captain & Indian Fighter James H. Callahan

James Callahan's middle name is Hughes, not Harry

Sapling from Austin's Treaty Oak planted here in 2003, I think it died

No trees to block the viewing of this regal courthouse

Zoom in the art deco eagle in the top corner

Baird was the mid point of the 1st hwy from Savannah, GA to San Diego, CA

Callahan County Sheriff's Department with barred jail windows

It is the oldest (1898) still functioning jail in the state of Texas

Viewed from the NW side, the courthouse is closed for renovation

First Callahan County Jail was built in Belle Plaine in 1878

Citizens of Baird voted to pay for and move the jail here in 1883

A great county does not need new jails!
