Seventeen weeks since the last game on November 20, 2002, the first game of the
Spring 2003 Wednesday Mixed league pitted perennial powerhouses Down A Few versus Mixed Up on a
cool evening hours before hostilities erupted in Iraq. The four month layoff showed mightly as the heart
of the line up put up a big goose-egg in offensive stats (other than Ks). Offense was weaker than defense
for both teams as a low-scoring game plodded along. Down a Few put together one good offensive
inning to retake the lead and held Mixed Up to no score their last six outs. The lone five run
inning was bookended by two HR-Ks. Apparently, the new, lamer softballs are more robust than expected.
Robert's first inning blast received an orbital boost to the other side of the four lane boulevard from a
passing SUV's windshield. Defense ruled the game and the game's four key plays had Scott R getting the
double play in the first, Laura making a fine catch out in left and Shelly blocking the plate
and preventing the tieing score both in the fifth, and Michelle snagging a hard grounder in the final inning
to secure the win.
David allowed one walk for two bases that later resulted in both 3rd inning runs but somewhat made up
for it with a swinging strikeout final out. Opponents gave 4 free bases to Down A Few's 2.
Afterwards, a co-op in the 7pm game lost a tooth from a batting foul-tip and the US launched cruise missles
against Iraq, starting the war.

Two games in two weeks inspite of an early morning storm puts Down A Few facing
a powerful The Outcasts on a nice cool evening perfect for softball. The
Outcasts nickled and dimed runs in four of six innings due to fielding mistakes, usually by the pitcher.
Down A Few could only put one good inning together and a run-rule stopped that scoring onslaught at 6.
The visiting The Outcasts tied the game in the final inning putting home field advantage to the test.
Down A Few was set up perfectly as Mark got a one out double and Scott R drove him in with two outs,
winning the game.
David allowed one walk for two bases that resulted in both 1st inning runs. He also popped up in the 5th
with a runner on 3rd ruining his perfect season, blowing his chance to ice the game, and putting Mark and
Scott R on the spot for final inning heroics.
The opponent pitcher gave up no walks bringing the season total to 4 bases given and 4 bases taken.
Down A Few has beaten both teams that traditionally prevent them from winning the title.
We just need to take care of business and get that undefeated season and championship. Next week, we take on the
undefeated My Big Fat Beer Cooler, with only one other undefeated team left in the league to challenge.

Three non-rainouts in a row! A modern record! The game between Down A Few and
My Big Fat Beer Cooler can be summarized as "everybody walks!" All ten Down A Few players
got at least one free base and four Cooler players hit the bags for free as well. The first and
fifth run-ruled innings came from 10 walks for the visitors in those innings alone. A somewhat forgetable
game had few memorable highlights. One was Mark hitting a ground rule double through the wickets in
center field. Another was Robert hitting into a second inning triple play.
David allowed one walk for one base and Mark allowed three walks for four bases in fifth inning relief.
The opponent pitcher gave up sixteen walks for 25 bases bringing the season total to 8 bases given
and 29 bases taken. We go for four games in a row next week versus the (1-1) Double Jeopardy.

The fourth game in five weeks pits undefeated Down A Few vs the
co-ops of Yo Mama. The Co-ops had a much better pitcher than our previous opponent but
had much worse batting capabilities. Yo Mama put a runner on third twice but both scoring
threats were ended with plays elsewhere as the runner touched homeplate. Down A Few fielded
a mostly ladies team with a ending battery of Vicky, Carly, Rebecca to capture the shutout. Robert was
unable to control his manliness and added to the teams homerun/out total while showing off for the
ladies. David pitched four innings and gave up no walks. Mark took the last inning and gave up one
walk for one base in relief. The opponent pitchers gave up four walks for 5 bases bringing the
season total to 9 bases given and 34 bases taken. David got doubled up returning to 2nd after a caught fly
ball and refused to believe his teammates when they said the ball went into the outfield on the tag.
As Yo Mama unsuccessfully tried to tag him out with two more poor throws, David reluctantly
walked back to second and got on base as the ball finally arrived. He finally listened to new dugout
coach Justice Kyle Huffman talking chatter from the dugout in his stroller.
Bye week next, see ya on April 30th.

Tonight's game, sandwiched between two bye weeks, had Down A Few taking on
Aimee's Just for Fun. David's lifetime of boozing and partying his nerve endings away came in handy
in the first inning as he unwittingly walked into a line drive that struck him dead-on in the chest. The nerves
had enough zip left in them to alert him of the impact where he then picked up the ball and threw out the
runner for the third out. He is still perfect in picking up the out after being beaned by a batted ball, now
five for five. The impact didn't affect his pitching as he gave up no walks but did affect his
batting since he fouled out in the 3rd inning. The rest of the team had a banner offensive day as five players
had perfect batting stats and most players sweetened their seasonal stats with tonight's effort. The opponent
pitcher gave up seven walks for 8 bases bringing the Down A Few's season total to 8 bases given and 37
bases taken. Bye
week next week and then we take on the 0-5 Dinks, followed by the 3rd place N'Gators and 4th place Brady Bunch.
Don't let down now while we are in the championship driver's seat. David recommends Talisker single-malt-scotch
and Blue Bell Cookies & Cream for overcoming softball related injuries.

Down A Few was able to scrape up enough players to take on the Dinks. With
that accomplished, Scott's offense was all the team needed to pick up the "W" as he completed the cycle, a first
for Kamman/Huffman coached teams over eight seasons. Keith had flirted twice before with the cycle, falling short
by a HR and a single in previous chances. Crash had last done it versus Space Cow People on July 12, 2000. David
pitched the first two innings and Mark pitched the last four, giving up only one two-base walk. The opponent
pitcher gave up seven walks for eight bases bringing the season total to 10 bases given to 45 bases taken. Next
game is a toughie as we take on second place N'Gators (5-1). Then we take on third place Brady Bunch (4-2) whose
star player Rachelle belted out not one but TWO dingers during the game, the second in the top of the final inning
giving Brady Bunch the victory. She's getting nothing but pitches at the hands when we play! Bring your "A"
game next week at 7pm! This is our last big hurdle. |

Undefeated Down A Few took on strong contender Brady Bunch in a first ever, late night,
10pm game. The night started rough and ended worse as David's 30 year old Cesar Cedeno glove fell apart in the first
inning. The loving, protective spirit of the defense minded, wife beating, former Astro was sorely missed as the Down A Few defense
had larger holes than the fabled glove. Brady Bunch took advantage of the free bases
and extra base runners handed them in the first and fifth innings and completely shut down Down A Few with
tenacious defense after the first inning. Brady Bunch finally redeems themselves after the twin forfeits back in August of 1999.
David ends his worst coed season ever by giving up two walks for three bases and went one for three batting but got thrown
out sneaking an extra base on the one hit. David finishes the season without a single extra-base hit.
His mom and sis made a rare appearance and had a flash-back to his pony league baseball days where bench warming was
the only strong part of his game. The opponent
pitcher gave up four walks for six bases bringing the season total to 13 bases
given to 51 bases taken. Down A Few finishes the season next week versus Double Jeopardy without their
sure pitching, poor fielding position one man who will be away on business. A win will give Down A Few the spring season championship. A loss
will put them in a three way tie.

Down A Few wins its first wednesday coed championship by defeating Double Jeopardy
in a short season delayed by only two rainouts. The Kamman/Huffman squad win their first title since the second
of a back-to-back championship in the Summer of 2001 as Easy Out. Overwhelming offense and smothering defense
gave Down A Few the victory by the end of the first inning. David traveled to NYC, missed tonight's softball game,
and missed tonight's Astros no-hitter of the Yankees. Mark filled in and gave up no walks while the team garnered
6 for nine bases making the final ratio 13 bases given for 60 bases taken. Outstanding Season Awards go to Mark
and Scott R who played in all 8 games and had the highest batting averages along with Vickie and Shelly.
The next season starts on paper on June 18th but play will not resume until July 23rd due to five straight
rainouts and one hurricane Claudette. |
