The new season started on a not-as-sweltering August evening after a blessed low humidity front passed through the day before. The upstart Scrappers are taking the season off but two new teams complete a seven team, no byes, one doubleheader schedule. With that, More Cowbell faced their most familiar opponent, N'Gators, for the 22nd time. Lately, the home team has been outmatched but tonight's contest was a different story. Strong defense was the key for both teams as multiple double plays were recorded on each side. More Cowbell played with a staggered 6 guy, 5 girl lineup, with each guy taking one inning off. Scott pitched the 5th inning, gave up one 2-base walk, but made a diving stop to send the game to the final inning all tied up. Scott, Amy, Blake, and Ashley stepped up and got 4 hits in a row, then Chris B sacrificed in a final run dropping the N'Gators to a 3 run deficit in their final at-bat. David took the mound for the last inning and the defense limited the N'Gators to only two runs and held on for a narrow win. Welcome to Brandon who joined the team and ran down many outfield flies. Thanks to Amy Sea of Big Ballaz who filled our 5th lady spot as catcher allowing Ashley (2nd) and Moose (1st) to shine as they shut down the right side of the infield to the opponents bats. David (5 innings) and the opponent pitcher gave up no walks. David also enjoyed a gift from generous scorekeeper as he was awarded a base hit on an infield grounder similar to one that Scott got tagged with an ROE last season that left him 23 for 24 and no 1000 batting average. Chris C just might have earned the the 3-spot in the batting order for that!

An almost full moon, a 30 minute earlier sunset, and low 80 degree temperatures greeted More Cowbell as they took on Big Ballaz. The home team responded to the fair weather with defense almost as stifling as the weather was only weeks ago. David's shin deflected a liner away from Scott in the first but the next batter hit into a double play. Meghan took the field for the first time and helped the defense hold strong throughout the game and only gave up two runs. The offense hit a whole season's worth of sacrifice flies, which, with 5 walks, kept the hit count low, but runs scored high. The team has gathered 5 walks and six free bases while giving out only 1 walk and two free bases for the season. The Benson's head off on a three wednesday honeymoon and STS-115 may sap more regulars from the field. The next few weeks will result in a much different roster. After the game, players from Mixed Up, N'Gators and David played a little beer-fueled homerun derby. David may swing a little harder during games as only his 30oz bat was able to knock a ball out of park. But if his batting was ailing, his fielding was worse and it is best to remember that gloves stop balls better than faces.

Temperatures in the low 80's again greeted Wednesday coed softball as More Cowbell faced Contract Killers in a battle of the undefeateds. The visitors were missing more key players than the home team as Erin, Meghan, and Karl stepped in for the honeymooners and the STS-115 flight supporters. The visitors were missing their outfielders and More Cowbell took full advantage of the pourous defense. Shanna hit the first ladies in-the-park homer in recent memory and was a triple away from the cycle. Scott was one base away from the cycle himself with an extra 3-bagger instead of a homerun. The whole team chipped in offensively and dropped a rare 1000 slugging average on the stat page. The defense was stout as well and held Contract Killers to single digit base runners. David gave up no walks and caught most balls heading his way with a glove and none with his face. The team has gathered seven walks and nine free bases while giving out only one walk and two free bases for the season. Welcome to Karl, playing his first game with More Cowbell and thanks to Erin for filling in for the STS-114 supporting Moose. The early double header is next week with another scramble for a full team. So keep your eyes open for quality ball players, I mean, really, explore the space!

The nicest weather since mid May greeted wednesday coed softball twelve hours before Atlantis and STS-115 landed in Florida. With a full team miraculously in place, More Cowbell took the field and looked straight into a setting sun. Luckily, the N'Gators had more trouble catching balls out of the sun than the home team. The More Cowbell defense needed just two innings to adjust to the sun and held the visitors scoreless after allowing two early runs. Scott and Shanna were first to discover the effects of the blinding sun and grabbed 11 bases in 8 at-bats, while scoring 7 runs and driving in another 6. Moose and Chris pushed three runs each across the plate as well and Bruce came out in place of Blake who's wife drove off with his softball gear. Brandon got his first hit of the season and shut down the left side of the infield at third base. Thanks to Erin and Amy Sea who came out and played extra games before their real team's matchup later in the evening. David gave up no walks while the team received one bringing the season total to eight walks and ten free bases taken while giving out only one walk for two free bases. Grab a beer while waiting for the visiting teams to changeout and on to doubleheader game number two. View Game Photos.

The second game of the double header had More Cowbell facing the only winless team from the summer season, Dodgeball. The visitors, who earned their first victory the week before, had been practicing and dueled with More Cowbell through four innings. But when the top of the lineup came out for a third time, the home team dropped two run-ruled innings on the visitors. Scott, Moose, and Bruce kept up the torrid pace on the basepath from game 1 while Shanna and Brandon both added an extra base hit to the stat sheet. Bruce got tangled up with the unobservant Dodgeball first baseman who liked to stand on the bag even when no play was impending. Bruce was awarded third by the ump but went back to 2nd on his own accord after the visitors complained long enough. David blew his perfect season by giving up one walk for one base and failing to drive the ball out of the infield twice in one game. Season totals are now eight walks and ten free bases taken while giving out two walks for three free bases. Our Amy replaced the Big Ballaz's Amy for game 2 and thanks to Erin who put in two extra games before her game at 9pm. Shiner Kolsch has away of getting people come out and play. More Cowbell takes the lead with five wins but must scramble to field another 6pm roster next week while the Benson's are on their honeymoon. Photos

Fall was in the air as Big Ballaz had their rematch with More Cowbell on a night that the itchy team logo shirt was almost needed for warmth. The setting sun was in David's face most of the game and he was extra worthless defensively as four ground balls grazed his shoes on the way to the outfield for a basehits. He was able to get the ball over the plate and surrender no walks but the release had him looking straight into the sun. That excuse didn't come from anyone else on the field as the other 19 players had an outstanding defensive performance. Scott and Christie ended all base running threats with double plays including a major league toss straight from Christie's glove to Scott. The Big Ballaz showed tenacious "D" as well, virtually silencing the ringing cowbell for all but one breakout inning. The opposing pitcher must have had some good stuff as he forced David into two lame infield popouts, Jennifer & Chris each had a foul out, and Scott hit into a fielder's choice. Big Ballaz has been the only team capable of denying Scott a base hit for the last two seasons! Brandon was the only batter to figure out (3 for 3) the opposing pitcher who wanted nothing to do with Moose and let her walk to first all three times. But there they stayed, stranded on base, in all but one reach. More Cowbell found their bats and batted around the fourth inning putting the game out of reach with only Scott's FC and Chris' FO slowing down the offense. Thanks to Christie for making her first substitution appearance this season and to Erin who may have made her last appearance as the honeymooners, distance workers, and Russian space partnership teammates all return next week, and just in time, as next week will be the big show down, the clash of the titans, of Wednesday coed softball as Mixed Up and More Cowbell butt heads for the championship. Something More Cowbell teams haven't won since Mark Huffman moved to Virginia almost two years ago.
Now is the time. The team's been up against it, things have been wrong, and the breaks have been beating the Cowbells. Go in there with all you got and win just one championship for the Greif-er. I might not know where I'll be then (too much beer or emergency room), but I'll read the website later, and I'll be happy.

The 20th matchup between More Cowbell and Mixed Up was everything it was supposed to be. Both teams were undefeated, the winner of this head-to-head has been crowned champion in 19 of the previous 24 seasons, and one would reign again when the final out was made. Both defenses came to play and no runners made it past first until Scott led off with a double in the 4th, Moose pushed him to 3rd, and Blake sacrificed him home. More Cowbell had an insurmountable 1-0 lead for Mixed Up was held scoreless five straight innings. Victory was surely at hand, if only the More Cowbell bats could wind down the clock. But Mixed Up's pitcher had good stuff this evening. Michael induced eight outfield flyouts and five ground balls to the pitcher, one for a double play. He shut down the potent More Cowbell offense holding half the lineup to a oh-fer evening. But yet, the More Cowbell defense did the same, until the sixth inning when David lost the pitching dual yet again. After giving up a lead off double and getting one out, David blinked, and coughed up a two base walk, putting runners at 2nd & 3rd. A sacrifice fly tied the game and with two outs and a man at third, Michael stepped up with the game in his hands. And again, as in too many times in the past, he delivered. A triple drove in the go-ahead run and a throwing error provided an insurance run. More Cowbell, down 3 to 1, had a chance, but two quick outs made it rather remote. Blake, Ashley, and Chris B started a two out rally but it ended one run short. Mixed Up will win their ninth championship next week, More Cowbell's championship drought will stretchout to two years with five straight 2nd place seasons, and Coach Greif's office will continue to be empty of crystal softballs.

A third rainout in a row was avoided as Horny Toads took the field to face More Cowbell in the final regular season game. Disappointment with the last game still lingered for David as he grounded out to first with bases loaded to end the first inning. The team, however, enjoyed an easy game versus an overmatched team and happily padded their O-stats. Moose was the player of the game as she drove in 6 runs, scored 3 and pushed her batting average to a team best for the season. Bruce and Chris C quietly batted a 1000 and Scott jacked his slugging average to 6/1000s shy of the team record he set back in the spring. David walked two batters in a row for 3 bases and helped push the Horny Toads only run across the plate in the 3rd inning. This puts the season walk total to 4BBs for 6bases given and 13BBs for 16bases taken. Thanks to Erin and Amanda for subbing in. Perfect attendance awards go to Jennifer, Chris C, David, and Scott. Moose had the best ladies batting average and Shanna was the best slugger. Blake led the men in batting average and Scott put up the second best slugging average ever. More Cowbell has one more chance to play in 2006 with the probable season ending tournament in the next week or so. If the team elects to play, maybe we can finish the year with a bang after taking yet a fifth 2nd place finish in a row.

After two weeks waiting on the Tuesday league to finish, the fall tournament finally got underway as fall arrived and the temperature dropped down to 55 degrees. The first game featured Wed-2 seed More Cowbell versus Tue-3 seed Balls N Curves. A nice strong breeze kept things cool and pitches errant as David won the pitching dual, despite giving up 2 walks for 4 bases and 2 runs scored, but bested the opponent's 6 walks for 8 bases and 3 runs scored. The More Cowbell offense was feast or famine, either deliver a run-rule or a shutout. Karl, Brandon, Trien, and the newlyweds did the most damage offensively but the knockout blow came from Shanna as she completed the final run-rule inning with a three run blast over the center field fence. Shanna belted one out of the park during the summer tournament as well for Thursday's Thunder Bear, but this was her first dinger for More Cowbell. Following the victory, More Cowbell enjoyed a hour long stiffening wait on the metal bleachers in the cold breeze awaiting the victor of the Tue-1 seed Wrecking Crew versus the Wed-4 seed N'Gators, but at least they enjoyed the High Life.

After a chilly, hour long wait, More Cowbell got to face Wrecking Crew, fresh from their victory over N'Gators, in the semi-finals. The More Cowbell offense struggled to warm up the muscles and joints and were able to manufacture a run per inning the first four frames. The defense stayed strong until David succumbed to the wind and coughed up a two base walk and drove in a run. Wrecking Crew took advantage of the gift and pressed their offense for a one run lead. More Cowbell tied it up in the top of the fourth but the home team retook the lead in the bottom of the frame. The bats opened up in the fifth inning as More Cowbell delivered eight straight base hits for a surprising run-rule inning with no outs made. The advantage was short lived as Wrecking Crew proceeded to follow suit but their sixth run, on third with no-outs, was tagged out at home two batters and outs later, leaving the game tied. With time running out, More Cowbell left two base runners stranded and had to rely on another defensive stand. But the Hudspeths willed their team to victory as Mark hit a one out triple and Tracie drove in the winning run. Offensive honors go to Chris B, Moose, Karl and Ashley for batting average; Karl & Jennifer's two out one run rally; David's bases clearing double in the 5th; and Moose driving David home to complete the run-rule. Defensive honors go to Jennifer and Karl for their leftside defensive lockdown and especially to Ashley for two foul fly outs at home and the tag-out that prevented the go ahead run in the fifth. Wrecking Crew got to chill for 30 minutes while waiting for Mixed Up to comeback with two runs in the final frame for a one run win over Big Ballaz. Fresh from hard fought second game, Mixed Up continued to fire on all cylinders and easily put away Wrecking Crew 13-2 for the Fall Tournament championship.
