A new era in softball begins as David takes up the coaching reigns with the departure of Mark Huffman to Virginia. David and Donna promptly sneak off to Cayman Brac and leave the coaching to Michelle. Michelle leads a brand new team with an enthusiastic name, Whoop-de-doo, onto the field with a few players who haven't hit the diamond this millenium. It took an inning to shake off the rust and remember how to play as the Not So Incredibles grabbed three in the first inning but were then shut down the rest of the game. Whoop-de-doo put together one strong inning in the third and the team pushed Scott across the plate in the fourth in their two scoring innings. The last two innings allowed for stat tweaking and Whoop-de-doo scored their first victory in their first attempt. Scott gave up no walks and Ashley coaxed one out of the opponent pitcher. Whoop-de-doo has 1 walk for 1 base for the year. Next week we face the undefeated spring champion and perpetual arch-nemesis, Mixed Up.

Donna and David return just in time to face the undefeated spring champ, Mixed Up. David hadn't played since November and Donna hadn't played since 2001. The first inning went well as Mixed Up's Michael was thrown out at first and Whoop-de-doo scored the first run as David drove in a blood relative (Andy) for the first time since 1990. Then throwing and fielding errors doomed Whoop-de-doo to a 13-2 deficit in the final inning. However, the visitors didn't let the lopsided score bring them down and put up their own crooked number in the top of the fifth. A first ever 'seven' for a Greif coed team. Mixed Up ran out the time for the victory but Whoop-de-doo showed some spirit and didn't get down. Neither team gave up a walk and the Greif kids accounted for 7 hits and 4 rbis. Andy gets a blue star for going three for three and toughing it out after pulling a hamstring running down a ball in the outfield and finished the game at third. Chris C, Benson, Blake, and Ashley each had a multiple hit outing as the team had respectable offensive showing. Just need to work a little on the defense to become a coed softball force.

A hot day cooled to a pleasant evening as Whoop-de-doo took on Big Ballaz in the third game of the night. Scott took his position at short, David on the mound, and Andy on the bench with a big, ugly, purple bruise on the back of his thigh. Whoop-de-doo surprised the home team with two run-ruled innings assisted with five walks. The two innings demoralized Big Ballaz to the point that their SS berated David on second for taking a walk with bases loaded and not swinging at inside pitches bouncing off his shoes. David also walked two guys which lead to all three of the Big Ballaz' runs. Not a good game for David at all. However, his teammates picked him up by giving him a big comfortable lead and shut down the home team when they weren't given free bases. Our opponents have given up 6 walks for 8 bases while David had given up 2 walks for 4 bases.

After a one week layoff due to last week's rainout, Whoop-de-doo took the field against a familiar opponent, N'Gators. The home team put forth a stellar defensive performance tonight and shut down N'Gators to only two scoring opportunities. Andy set the tone by playing one defensive inning and caught the first blast of the game, a hard liner to third. Chris C arrived during the inning and Andy was allowed to return to the bench and nurse his injured hamstring with a doctor-approved pilsner prescription. The offense manufactured a run at a time, helped out by six multiple base hits, the most of the season. Moose grabbed the first one with great base running after a well placed hit to the right field line. Scott launched his slugging average by taking 4 of those 7 extra bases and Chris C and David got their first extra bag of the season. Jennifer scored the first SAC of the season and drove in two runs and Benson had a constant presence on base going 3 for 4. But again, the key stat of the game was defense. Scott to Moose to Jenny. Four double plays won this game. Good job team. David walked Nikki, the 2nd to last batter of the game, blemishing his evening performance, while moving his season totals to 3 walks for 5 bases given while Whoop-de-doo has coaxed 6 walks for 8 bases from our opponents, although none tonight. Next week, we take on undefeated Chicks 'n Sticks who beat down Mixed Up in tonight's 6pm game. The scouting report says their chicks get hits so we need a defensive repeat to get back in the running for first place.

Thunderstorms on the horizon promised a cooler evening of overcast skies as up and coming Whoop-de-doo took on the undefeated first place Chicks n' Sticks who had just dispatched defending champ Mixed Up the prior week. It wasn't the coolness of the evening (85 degrees) but the multiple gifts given by the home team to the visitor that made it seem like Christmas in June. Chicks n' Sticks, still high on their first place enabling victory last week, hand wrapped 5 walks and 2 errors in the first inning for a 5 run lead to Whoop-de-doo. The visitors added another 2 before the home team got the "D" working for two innings but gave up another 6 in the last two frames. The Chicks tested the left side defense all night but Chris C, Trien, Jennifer, and Blake shut them out for four of six innings. Blake misjudged a liner but threw a perfect laser to Chris C who merely had to catch the ball and let the runner slide into his glove at third. The Chicks showed what got them the victory last week in the 5th, but it was not enough as they went 3 and out in the final frame. Batting averages went down tonight but on-base averages climbed. Jennifer had a great night with the bat going 3 for 4 and David's new workout regimen propelled him to his best night in years. And unlike last week, no walks given up this week. The Chicks first pitcher could not find the plate and his 2nd inning replacement gave up an additional walk for 6 total with 8 bases bringing the season total to 12 walks for 16 bases taken while David has given up 2 walks for 4 bases for the season. The victory puts us in a three way tie with Mixed Up and Chicks n' Sticks. We have a rematch with Mixed Up in two weeks. Next week, we face the 2-3 VFPs but until then, let's open up a few beers. Cheers!

The mighty Whoop-de-doo took on the hapless co-ops in another easy victory played solely for the purpose of drinking beer and padding offensive stats. Too bad the latest batch of co-ops, had other ideas. The VFPs completely shut down the Whoop-de-doo offense limiting them to their fewest at bats since the August 6th, 2003 loss to Just for Fun. Their SS, 1st and pitcher made all but one play including two tags of baserunners between 3rd and home. Plus, the Whoop-de-doo defense made plenty of errors that let the score get ugly especially the four unearned runs in fourth. But even with a perfectly played defense, the lack of offense still would have led to a 1-4 loss to the co-ops. A sore reality best summed up with annoying cliches: "We came out flat. We didn’t get the job done. We lost our focus. There were too many defensive lapses. The ball just didn't bounce our way. We’ll just have to put this loss behind us. Give them all the credit. I tip my hat to them." Post game cold beer and the announcement of Texas' walkoff homer to advance to the CWS championship series helped ease the pain of the orangebloods of the team. Neither pitcher gave up a walk leaving the season total to 12 walks for 16 bases taken while David has given up 2 walks for 4 bases for the season. Next week is the rematch with the stumbling Mixed Up who have lost twice since our last head to head. Let's keep them on their downward spiral.

The rematch between Wednesday coed arch-rivals Mixed Up and Whoop-de-doo occurred on the final day of the dryest June on record. Both 4-2 teams had struggled recently and were hoping to turn things around. The game started well for the home team with the first two batters going down quietly including dangerous Michael. Then David walked the second guy with the cleanup lady following to first. A few hits and sloppy plays later had Mixed Up grabbing a four run frame. Whoop-de-doo shut down the visitors the rest of the game. Scott cleared the bases with a three run four-bagger and gave the home team the lead for good by the end of the second inning. The last two innings had Whoop-de-doo manufacturing five runs and trying to run out the clock. After Michael personally scored the last Mixed Up run with a lead off triple, the visitors only garnered two more hits to close out the evening. Great defense held Mixed Up in check all but the first inning. Two double plays were recorded including one astounding inning where David accounted for all three outs. A Sally liner to the mound with a spin-round move to double off the runner at first. Plus, a knocked down grounder to second intercepted and pitched to first for the third out. Jenny had one of her best games ever playing solid "D" and recording a 1000-plus slugging average. Scott followed suit with a 2000-plus SLG and needed only one more bat to go the cycle. David lost the pitching dual yet again, giving up 3 bags to none, but did coax an inning ending guy K with runners in scoring position. Season totals now have the opponents coughing up 12 walks for 16 bases while David has given up 4 walks for 7 bases. We next take on the Scrappers who lost to the coops tonight and get to face us twice and the first place Chicks once in their final three. The Chicks face the oh-fer Not So's twice on the way to their eventual championship. It is gonna be ugly!

Former coach Mark Huffman dropped by from Virginia to catch Whoop-de-doo take on the Scrappers in the last game of a record setting hot day. Mark was treated to shutout softball and a ladies offensive marvel as Jennifer, Jenny, and Shelly each batted 1000 and accounted for the lion's share of team hits, ribbies, and runs scored. Jenny had her best game ever, having the only 1000 plus slugging average for the team and making every stop that came her way including assisting in two of the team's three double plays. With two games left, she can set new season records for the ladies if she can keep up this pace. David worked four shutout innings and helped himself with one P-to-1st and two 1st-to-Pitch defensive plays which limited scoring threats in a total team defensive effort. Mark came in to pitch the final two innings, showed the rust of a six month layoff, and walked four batters, including one guy, giving the Scrappers three runs. He settled down, made some defensive plays and secured the win in what is probably his only appearance in Gilruth Wednesday coed softball for 2005. Season totals now have the opponents coughing up 13 walks for 18 bases while David has given up 4 walks for 7 bases and Mark gave up 4 walks for 5 bases. Scott has given up no walks in one game of work. Next week will be a hot one at 6pm versus the 7th place Big Ballaz who have the distinction of having games called early against them for arguing calls and berating opponent's unwillingness to swing at bad pitches. The Scrappers next face the first place Chicks N' Sticks and then us again in the final game. Good luck next week!

After a six week absence, the rain clouds returned and blocked out the sun's heat, cooling the 6pm game to a brisk 90 degrees. In a rematch of game 3, the Big Ballaz were once again handcuffed by their lack of pitching. Eleven walks for 13 bases basically handed the game over to Whoop-de-doo. The home team gave up some walks as well and all but one led to runs for the visitors. David gave up a two out rbi guy walk with the girl following to first leading to two more runs. Kevin survived a walk in the fourth but two walks allowed in the fifth along with timely hitting allowed the visitors to post seven runs in the final frame. Season freebie totals now have the opponents coughing up 24 walks for 31 bases while David - 6BBs for 10 bases in 42 innings, Mark - 4BBs for 5 bases in 2 innings, Kevin - 3BBs for 3 bases in 2 innings, and Scott 0BBs in 6 innings for a team total of 13BBs for 18 bases in 52 innings. Offense played a key part in the Whoop-de-doo victory as well. Scott hit into a fielders choice in his last at bat foiling his bid for the cycle. He now has all but one of the seven 3+ base hits for the team and should top the season slugging record that he set last fall (1.400). The ladies collectively posted an astounding .882 on base average (15 of 17) tonight which kept the visitors out on the field in the heat while Whoop-de-doo relaxed in the shady dugout sipping cold brew. Next week is the rainout makeup game versus the 4-5 Scrappers who have dropped three in a row. We have two dates to play the tenth game of the season. We have have played only one other 10 game season this millineum. The first place Chicks N' Sticks take on the last place Not So Incredibles and should sew up first place for a team other than Mixed Up or Down A Few/Easy Out for only the 2nd time in 15 seasons.

In the last game of the season whose champion was already decided, second-place Whoop-de-doo took on the Scrappers who were frustrated with a three game losing streak. Both teams played well but the visitors played better, got more hits, and scored more runs. However, the home team was distracted by the JSC police pulling our left-center fielder out of the game for questioning. Apparently LC had pointed out the lack of control an over-reacting mother had of her child running free in the parking lot. That and blue's three questionable calls which would have changed the outcome of the game had they gone the home team's way. Either way, Whoop-de-doo still finished in second place, although now tied with Mixed Up due to the loss. Game notables had David getting shellacked for three of four innings but gave up no walks. Kevin pitched the last two innings and gave up one walk that amounted to nothing. New team member Kim, gave a great audition and will join the team full time next season. The Scrapper's defense held the team to their second lowest run total, both lows resulted in losses. The spring season layoff and the big change in personnel still had Whoop-de-doo conclude a pretty good season with a second place finish. Overall season accolades go to Ashley and Chris C (Ironman Award) for playing all 10 games and Scott for setting the all-time slugging average with a 1.591, besting Kevin Graves' 1.474 set in the Fall of 2000.
