The thursday experiment started with More Cowbell facing former coed overall league champ
Softball Superheroes after a three week rainout delay. Cowbell's first fall lineup had 3
new faces and a familiar substitute. As Scott entered the batter's box, instead of yelling, "Play Ball!"
Blue announced the majority of our bats were now illegal. Apparently, teams are required to buy new bats
every four years as our 2000 model bats must be replaced with 2004 model bats. The one remaining bat
was not to too many teammate's liking and the offensive pop was lost for Cowbell. Moose was
harmed the most as her now illegal 22oz bat forced her to grab a lumbering 26oz bat. More Cowbell
played strong defense and stayed with the Superheroes. Perhaps their best bats were lost as well.
Scott, John, and Kristen scored and drove in runs and helped grab a lead in the final inning but
couldn't hold it as the home team forced an extra inning. Ken started at 2nd and Kristen & Scott sent
him home. But in the final frame, the Superheroes sent their mightiest warrior to bat who immediately
drove in the winning run and scored two batters later to win the game. Neither pitcher surrendered a
walk. A rematch is scheduled for next week, same team, same time, but we are home. Let's get 'em!
A heartly welcome to Cerise, Kristen, and John to the team. Thanks to Jessica for filling in for the
ailing Jennifer. Watch the game tapes over the weekend and comeback ready to play! |

More Cowbell had an immediate rematch with Softball Superheroes seven days after losing
by one in extra innings. The home team continues to struggle putting ladies in the lineup but luckily,
two Thursday night substitutes stepped forward and the Ladies of More Cowbell added Donna P and Tracie H
to the fold. David had too much fun at the first annual UT-JSC Longhorn Rendezvous hours earlier and sent John
to the mound. The move worked as David's concentration on coaching, plus the hours of watching tape, helped
More Cowbell shutdown the Superhero offense. The visitor's had the same game tape and did not allow an
extra base hit but were unable to make up for their own lack of hitting. John gave up no walks and Tracie made
a great play at home to prevent a run. Every cowbell batter moved a runner, scored, or drove in a run. Thanks
to Jessica B, Donna P, and Tracie H for helping us a field a team. Next week, we take on tied-for-first
Loaded Bats. Ten-four, good buddy! |

More Cowbell took on Donna P's team, Loaded Bats, as the temps dropped down to brisk
high 80's. Cowbell started strong tonight and surged to a 9-0 lead after three innings. Defense was
stout and key plays were made the first three innings including last minute sub Alisha's tag of a runner at
home on a sacrifice fly turned double play. After 3 innings, the tide turned and the home team did
all the scoring. Luckily, there was only time for two innings and the game ended with Cowbell still up
by 2 runs. David won the pitching duel, surrendering no walks (thank you blue!) to one received. Many
thanks to Kristen, Tracie, and Viccie who helped fill the roster while Jennifer and Amy recuperate.
Next week, we take on (1-2) Ga-Goozsh, lets keep the cowbell ringing despite the rumors of no
brought-in beer next season. Don't make David retire now! |

More Cowbell brought forth a full roster of starters and faced Ga-Goozsh on a pleasant low
humidity and low 80's temp-wise evening. The evening started with the visitors leaving two runners
stranded and then David gave up his first walk in four seasons to the lead off batter. A misplayed
flyball later gave the home team a free run. Three up & three down for the visitors and then two base hits
for the home team gave them a 2-0 lead after two. David led off the 3rd with a base hit, Cerise pushed
him to 2nd and Scott drove him home for 2-1 deficit after three. After that, More Cowbell,
couldn't put more than two people on base in an inning and were completely shut down. Occasional
sub, Donna P, put an end to Scott & David reaching base after the third inning by snagging line drives
and running down right field bloops. More Cowbell's defense tightened up in the third and
held the home team scoreless for the rest of the game. Moose & Jessica both made key plays in the right
side infield, plus there were plenty of snow cones in the outfield. But alas, the offense is finding Thursday
night to be quite brutal. The three total runs is the lowest offensive output ever (Over 27 seasons & 210 games)
for More Cowbell and all her prior namesake teams. |

More Cowbell took on the undefeated Screwballers on a warm, humid night. Cowbell took
the field first and everyone took a turn missing a bouncing ground ball. Multiple errors and no outs
later, a quick run-ruled inning was a rude awakening for the home team. Scott stepped up to make amends
for last week and hit his first triple of the season. Jennifer hit him in and Chris C pushed Jennifer home
with his first extra base hit of the season. The offense's somewhat-of-an-answer inspired the defense
which clamped down after that. Key plays had Chris C backing up Ashley and caught a ball behind her on a
just-out-of-reach drive to the fence. David found a ball in glove on several hard hit grounders and also
recovered on a batted down ball and threw out a runner who was displeased with Blue's call. Scott was
destined to drive in some runs in the second but hit Ashley's foot as she tried to avoid the drive and was the
third out. Two hits and a ROE in the 4th and three hits in the 5th put two more runs on the board for
More Cowbell. The home defense finally gave up another run in the final frame after four straight
scoreless innings. The bottom of the lineup came up needing 3 to tie but were only able to add three more hits
before three more outs were collected and the Screwballers maintain their perfect record. Next week we take
on Scott's true Thursday night team, the mighty Thunderbear. Several key teammates are already
unavailable so coach David will need the assistance of all softball mercenaries available to field a
team and put a scare into the Thursday night favorites. |

More Cowbell faced Thursday night juggernaut Thunderbear on the first
cool softball night of the season. The mercenary filled Cowbell defense played admirably
and took the thunder out of the bear the first 3 innings. The space station with Discovery attached
trekked across the sky as More Cowbell came to bat and the distraction helped the
home team lead off with 4 straight hits and 3 runs in the first inning. The next two
passovers were sorely missed as Cowbell only got 4 more hits the rest of the game. Two
were doubles in the last frame as both Ken and Chris C had their best offensive game of the
season and tried to put the team on their back for the victory. But the team was too heavy
as the Thunderbear's championship quality defense kept half the team oh-fer the night. The pitching
duel was a tie as both David and Trien walked no batters. Trien made more defensive plays at
the mound but David induced a swinging strikeout from the Thunderbear's MVP shortstop.
Thanks to John, Jessica B, Viccie, Todd, and Merry who helped us a field a team tonight.
With two games left in the season, More Cowbell has matched the highest total of losses ever sustained
by ALL ancestral teams. However, our final two opponents are the only ones with a worst record, a combined 1-11.
More Cowbell can rebound for a .500 season but we will not be invited to the playoffs for the
first time ever. Maybe we should have switched to Tuesday night for this season afterall. |

More Cowbell faced the 0-6 Team MRI on a warmer than expected evening.
The home team belongs in the Thursday night league even less so than the visiting team and More
Cowbell found the defensive weaknesses of Team MRI after an inning and exploited those
weaknesses. Scott, David, and Kristen batted a thousand tonight and Jennifer had a thousand slugging
average with a double off the outfield wall. Neither pitcher walked a batter and Team MRI was only
able to manage two scoring threats in the game. In his 20th season, Scott surpassed the 300 hit
milestone by going 4 for 4, and unlike Craig Biggio, slid safely into second on his milestone hit.
Blue provided a new ball for the milestone and it was promptly put away for signatures from the team
and presentation at the next game.
The home team was allowed to bat around in the final inning and they were able to put up two runs on
SAC flies within three outs. The rest of the batting order put up another eight outs including a few
purposeful shots to Space Center Blvd. Next week is likely our last game of the year. With two dominant
teams, a four-way tie for third, and two weaker teams finishing the division, the odds are More Cowbell
will sit out the post season. We must first get past the second weaker team and put ourselves in the
four-way tie. Then wait four weeks til December for the post season team bracket announcement

More Cowbell did show up for the last game of their Thursday league season to face the 7th place team
to play for pride only. The Knuckleballers were desiring the pride a little more than More Cowbell
and shut down the home team decisively. Scott was held up at work so Thunderbear captain Barry filled
in at shortstop. Perhaps the lack of Mr. 300 did something to the team. Four players could not collect a
hit and everyone pitched in with their share of errors. Only Chris C and Ashley didn't want the game to end
as they both brought their A-game. Chris C continued his blistering offensive attack, waking up in the final
three games of the season, and distanced himself from Chris B in the stats. Scott and Jennifer were our
leaders on offense this season and only David was present at all 8 games but he sat out Game 2 after taking
too much rheumatism medicine before the game. Even with a victory, More
Cowbell would have missed the playoffs, but the defeat assured the team of their most losses in a season
ever. At least we won't have to wait three weeks for Weds league to finish for the playoffs in mid December.
Our character building experiment with Thursday league is over as Pitcher David is taking a Thursday
night MBA class in the spring semester. Enjoy the 3.5 month offseason and we'll see you in March, 2008, fully
rested and reloaded. |
