More Cowbell starts a new summer season facing a familiar foe, N'Gators.
A familiar outcome came about as well as the N'Gators hit the ball to awaiting gloves and
More Cowbell hit the ball just out of reach of the gloves. The Cowbell defense
swarmed to the ball like the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on!
The home team offense required four innings before the top of the lineup came back for another plate appearance.
The offense chugged along with a workman-like effort as Scott, Shanna, and David got a hit in each at-bat
and every player had either an RBI or a run scored, averaging three runs per inning for the game.
Coop Jenny returned to the team for the summer season and coop Leah took the field for More
Cowbell for the first time. Both shook off the rust well and did some damage at the plate and
shared 2nd base duties. David started the season without surrendering any walks maintaining the
streak from last season. That's the way to hit the ground running! |

The 6pm game is always tough to field a full team but More Cowbell got it done with
the help of Christy, Leah, Jerry, and Andy. We took on Big Ballaz who were hungry for
a victory after last season's big win on the final day. David was having a bad game walking
guys, cowering from easy grounders, and being incapable of getting to second base. Andy had
had enough fun and let Blake come back to third. David took Blake's spot in RC and Jerry took the mound
and immediately closed the hole up the middle. The scoring went neck and neck, Big Ballaz
would get a lead and More Cowbell would even it up. Four double plays helped More Cowbell
keep it close. When it came down to the last inning,
Chris B and Christy on the bases and David stepped up to drive in the winning runs. Too bad his
night only got worse as Blue called him out on strikes on a pitch that landed out of batter's box.
His older brother even ran up from coaching first to protest the call. But it was yet another reminder that
guys can't take a pitch with one strike even if it rolls. Leah stepped up and drove in the tieing
run but the inning ended shortly after with the game still undecided. The tiebreaker inning had
Big Ballaz pushing two runs across the plate and set up the bottom of the seventh with the
top of the More Cowbell lineup. Ashley started at 2nd
and Scott promptly drove her home with a double. Shanna duplicated Scott's shot and we were tied
with Shanna on 2nd and no outs. Blake moved Shanna to third and Jenny stepped up and drove in the
winning run. What a game! David gave up one walk for two bases, the first given or taken all
season. Next week, we take on the dangerous Scrappers while David out in the Caribbean
on the Carnival cruiseship Ennui. That might be good thing after this week's performance. |

More Cowbell took on the more-than-recreational Scrappers on Flag Day
while their pitcher was on vacation in the land of the Mexican flag. Scott took the mound
in David's place and suffered through two run-ruled innings as the whole team contributed
to an insurmountable Scrappers lead with walks, throwing errors, and the occasional
base hit. An uncalled fly
ball landed between three gloves and a late throw to home allowed a runner to beat the tag.
Offensively, the team played well and had the stats to win the game but the defense dug too
deep a hole in the first two innings and was unable to catch up. Trien hit a sure over-the-fence
out but the top crossbar kept it in the park for a nice jog to second. Blake did
even better and hustled the bases for the teams first four-bagger of the season. Chris C
was going for extra bases when he lost his footing rounding first and settled for a dusty,
dirty single. Trien replaced Scott on the mound and the team settled down defensively but
the Scrappers were already coasting and allowed only a few runs per inning until
the time ran out. Scott gave up four walks while the team took none. And off in a land far
away, David drank more beer away from the field than on it after enjoying a rightward
shift in the beer supply curve while visiting our neighbor to the south. |

The seasonal matchup with Mixed Up came on a cooler than normal night that
was more than made up for by a cloud of mosquitos from last week's endless rains. The usual pitching
dual ended early as Michael walked the first batter he faced and added a second walk in the
same inning. But, the Mixed Up defense held for only one run scored. More Cowbell had
only scratched out two walks from their rivals over the last three years and equaling that in the first
inning inspired the offense to its best night this season. Runs were tacked onto the tally
throughout the night and Mixed Up was held to only one run over four innings. All the damage
was done in the other two innings from timely base hits and one blown ground ball double play
that left David mighty dirty in the effort. Mixed Up went on to a run
rule in that inning and tied up the game. Scott and Moose had a two out rally to put the
visitors up by one but the defense couldn't hold on for the win. A nice run down tag out
between third and home sent the game to extra innings. With Moose starting at 2nd, Blake,
Shanna, Chris, Jennifer, and Trien put the game away with five straight hits. David drove in
a final run, but was then doubled off to end the inning, and Scott's quest for another cycle was
thwarted. Mixed Up came up for the final at bat, but they were deflated after the big top
frame, and went down in order. More Cowbell pushed the all-time matchup record back to a 9-9-1 tie.
David walked no batters, winning the pitching dual for the first time in memory. Thanks to Nel who
filled in half a game. The two automatic outs taken in her spot did little damage as 8 runs were scored
in those innings. But the sudden hole in the outfield probably led to the run ruled inning and the
tying run in the fifth. Now we just need Mixed Up to defeat Scrappers and we can all enjoy
a three way tie for first. |

Wednesday coed softball's oldest rivalry (20 games) was renewed in the midst of the thickest
cloud of mosquitos ever experienced at the Gilruth Center. The game was never a contest and got
ugly immediately as the N'Gators were unable to muster any infield defense. The home team was
only able to collect four outs in the first three innings played in the run-ruled called shutout. More
Cowbell padded its offensive stats mightily and added .040 to its overall team AVG, OBP, and SLG
averages. All but David jolted their offensive stats, though David's OBP improved with the reach on
error. David did win the pitching dual giving up no walks to one taken and recorded the final out
with a line drive catch off of Nikki's bat. Thanks to Trien, Sally, and Leah who helped field a team
while STS-121 consoles sequestered teammates. Next week is a two rainout makeup double header.
If the mosquitos aren't dealt with by then, will we have any blood left for the second game? A sponsorship
from Off or Cutter insect repellant may be in the works. |

More Cowbell took on the Brew Crew co-ops in the first game of a double header.
Fewer mosquitos greeted us this week giving us a much more pleasant July evening in which to play.
Both teams scored a few runs early but after the second inning, the defenses dominated. The co-op
defense did not allow more than five batters to come to the plate the final four innings. The
co-op offense, however, made several key errors which contributed to their demise. Failure to tag up on
fly-outs and hitting the ball out of the park with runners in scoring position ended two scoring
opportunities late in the game. In the final frame, the Brew Crew's pitcher hit a third base
side pop-fly foul ball. As Trien tracked the foul beyond the dugout, he
took his eye off the ball, wary of the fence. The ball struck him in the head and drove his glasses into his eyelid and gave him
a good bloody cut. He was done for the night. He'll have a nice black eye but should be fine. Luckily,
Andy charged from the bleachers and took Trien's place at third and helped the defense mop up the final
inning. The four total runs was the fewest ever scored by More Cowbell (and all prior named teams)
and their opponent ever. Scott batted only twice in a game for the first time
as well. David gave up as many walks as he got hits after fine running catches by the first baseman and
RC gave him the oh-fer. Ashley had the most hits and was the slugger of the game. The team grabbed their gear and headed to Field 3. Get hydrated and take the
field for game two of the doubleheader. |

More Cowbell took on the winless Dodgeball on the much larger Field 3 in the second
game of a doubleheader. Dodgeball is
winless because they unable to catch outfield fly balls. Driving the ball out of the infield generally
meant an extra basehit. David found out that hitting the ball to the pitcher gave you an out. Ashley
and Amy didn't hit to the pitcher and both equaled their seasonal hits total with tonights dual game
performance. Moose hit the first ladies triple in three years, since Stephanie took 3 bags against
Double Jeopardy on June 11, 2003. Scott and Shanna were unstoppable again and both will set a
new season batting average record if they keep up the pace next week. And for the first time in probably
twenty years, a Greif drove in Greif who drove in a Greif as Jerry plated David and Andy cleaned up.
David gave up a two base walk for only the second time this season but pitched well when it counted and
made plays on most balls hit his way. The final week of the season has
#1 taking on #4 and #2 taking on #3. The Scrappers will take first place win or lose.
More Cowbell has captured a fourth straight second place finish but will face the three seeded
Space Monkeys in a contest for bragging rights.

More Cowbell concluded the regular
season by taking on the 3rd place Space Monkeys.
The home team defense kept the visitors in check all night giving up only two earned runs and David
walked a man leading to the run in the fifth. The Space Monkeys did well defensively three
innings but not so well in the 2nd & 3rd when More Cowbell tallied 11 runs. Scott should have
made it one more run as he hit an easy home run but the sixth run scored in front of him leaving him
with a triple due to the run-rule. In spite of that, Scott still had the team's 3rd highest slugging
average ever and ascended the throne to the highest batting average ever with his .955
surpassing David's .926 set in the summer 2000. Mark Huffman hit .917 in Summer 2002 and David had
a .909 last year to complete the short
and hallowed list of niners for a season. Scott is also the first person ever to reach base every at bat for the season.
Shanna went oh-fer tonight, dropped her average over 100 points, and
still set the ladies record for the highest batting average ever with .769 surpassing Shelly's .700
set in Fall 2003. Ironman awards go to Ashley, Shanna, Chris B, and Scott for playing in all eight
games. David gave up 3 walks for 6 bases for the season.
A big welcome to Bruce who will be joining the team for the Fall season, nice game! Next
week, we may or may not play in the post season. It all depends on the schedule and the whims of a team
called More Cowbell.

More Cowbell elected to participate in the second multi-league tournament and was blessed with
a first round bye and ended up play Wrecking Crew, another second place team without a bye. The
wisdom of having a tournament is always questioned as many players play on multiple nights and then must
make a decision which team to play for during the tournament. This decision left More Cowbell weaker
than they were all season and probably made Wrecking Crew stronger
as half of the Scrappers team played for the visiting team. With Shanna and Scott playing for thursday's
Thunder Bear team, More Cowbell was simply outmatched. David and Blake had a poor first inning
on defense and More Cowbell could not recover. David was moved to pitcher and Blake picked up the SS
position and had fine game after the first frame. Chris B, Blake, and Jenny did their best to push runs across
the plate but the Wrecking Crew defense and 90+ degree heat stifled the home team's offense most of the
night. Wrecking Crew will take on Thunder Bear thursday night and the winner will play in the
championship game. Meanwhile, More Cowbell players will have their feet up in the A/C, enjoying a cool beverage,
and wearing dry clothes. The Greif boys 40 and over club gave 'em hell on the field, won the post game drinking
contest, and were the last the leave a darkened Gilruth parking lot. See ya in the fall season . . . two more weeks.
