The summer season starts with More Cowbell taking on the team with no name, which apparently is now referred to as Team Gin Bucket. Scott returns to the team while Paul takes the night off and N'Gator Jessica fills in for biz-tripping Moose & Jessica C. More Cowbell defense played very well tonight by taking advantage of the coops' unfamiliarity with the rules of softball. Four double plays ended innings by doubling off base-runners after caught fly balls. David pitched extra well by painting the corners of the plate for both righties & lefties and got the big gunners to pop out or foul out all night long. Ken, Scott & Ashley played stout infield and got the ball to Jessica for the out. Lindsay made a fine pop out catch at home to send the opponent's best batter to the dugout. The More Cowbell offense brought their bats as well as Scott started the season with a 3000 slugging average, Jennifer belted another double, and David ran amuck for half a season's worth of bases. And Chris C, Ashley, and David each pushed a teammate across the plate with sacrifice at-bat. A great start for the new season of 11 teams playing five games per night on two fields. I gotta tell ya, we got a dynamite team, don't fear the reaper, take one, roll it.   Photos

Field One's outfield standing water, ominous clouds and severe storm warnings surrounding Houston threatened tonight's game but the cool breeze and early darkness made for a pleasant evening for softball. More Cowbell took on brand new Dreamliners who were still learning Gilruth coed softball rules when "Play Ball" was announced. The bats came out in the first inning for the home team as Scott led off with his 3rd homerun in two games and Jennifer and Chris B pushed Moose and Paul across for a decent 3 run first frame. But then big-field-hypnosis tookover and the offense hit a collective popfly with help from good junk from the Dreamliner pitcher. David enjoyed the out-to-right field wind as well and tinkered with his right-to-left curve ball and kept the visitors at bay most of the game. More Cowbell defense was stout as usual and posted two shutout innings before finally surrendering a run in the 3rd. A few basehit grounders died in shallow left field water puddles. The base runner noted the distance between ball and fielder was the same as himself and second base and extra bases were taken. A two run inning in the top of the 5th brought More Cowbell up to bat with the score knotted up and time running out. Moose led off with a single and Jennifer pushed her to third with another. Chris B came to bat needing just a SAC fly to win the game. He launched the ball to right center for a sure homerun but the game was over when Moose touched homeplate. Nice game winning RBI double Chris! Home field was the definate advantage for More Cowbell and all five games tonight were won by the home team.

More Cowbell faced Brew Crew on Field 1 on the warmest day thus far of spring. David made it back to the game on time after a trip to New Braunfels but decided to sit out, let Scott pitch and photographed the game with his new Canon Rebel XTI. Scott answered the call by leading off with a HR (his 5th leadoff HR in row!) and pitching a four run victory while giving up no walks. The Brew Crew made it a game through three innings but More Cowbell batted around for a five run 4th to put the game on ice. Scott, Moose, Paul, Chris B, and Lindsay each had multiple hits, Moose drove in four runs, including all three times Lindsay scored. Scott crossed the plate three times as well. The team played well without their captain and will have to do it again next week as David will be off on business. The opposition will be a little better next week when facing the N'Gators who ended More Cowbell's 19 game winning streak in the last matchup. The impending launch of shuttle Atlantis may postpone next weeks games as teammates man the consules instead of the batter's box. A new station truss segment and new solar arrays will be unfurled on STS-117. Note: David had a successful pilgrimage to Shiner yesterday. Not only did he obtain free beer and get his first taste of Shiner 98 (amber), but he learned that his goal of increasing Shiner's non-Bock beer sales 1% has successfully lowered Shiner Bock sales down to 85% of the brewery's total beer sales.   Koelsh rocks!

More Cowbell took on defending Wednesday Coed champions Fightin Hangovers moments after the Hangovers defeated Mixed Up 5-2. The champs had never beaten More Cowbell and succumbed last season to a team stacked with the last joint appearance of both Shanna and Scott. The Hangovers recalled that game well and stacked their team tonight for the big showdown. And a showdown it was for one whole inning as both teams traded blows for four runs each. Then More Cowbell faded and the Hangovers started pounding. More Cowbell could muster only half the first inning's offense over the next four frames and had more fielding errors than base hits. The hit total, batting average, and slugging average tells the story, . . . More Cowbell was dominated. David sat out and let Scott pitch and he did well giving up no walks, which was the only weakness of the champs. More Cowbell collected as many bases (6) with their bats on their shoulders as they did hitting the ball. However, that advantage was not pressed enough and the Katzenjammers pick up their first matchup win and the inside track to a repeat title.

More Cowbell took on Flying Circus Monkeys after picking up three substitutes including, gasp, one guy! FCM batted first and proceed to chalk up 5 runs with help from 3 infield errors. The visitors' excitement of actually scoring in a game and the disgust of the home infield brought forth a collective promise of playing better defense from that point onor the rest of the night. The offense struggled initially and three innings were needed before the home team could match the run total of the visitors' opening effort. But the defense kept its promise and held the visitors scoreless the final 3 innings. In the final frame, the offense came out and proceeded to bat until time was called with four runs scored and 2 more left on base. The offensive pattern seemed to be one-for-two-&-a-walk and four batters accomplished this. David tried to make it five but struckout looking instead. He statistically made up for it with one guy swinging strikeout, multiple popouts off the bat handles, and gave up 9 fewer free bases (0) than the FCM pitcher. But his ego still took a hit when Blue made him walk back to the dugout, bat in hand. Accolades go to Erin and Chris C for both belting doubles at key moments in the game. Erin drove in the 3rd run and set up the 4th after David got rung-up and Chris C put the game out of reach in the final frame and gave Jessica C an RBI opportunity that she pounced upon. More Cowbell is scheduled to play only once in the next three weeks so keep focused by stretching, meditating, and sipping your favorite summertime cold beverage.

More Cowbell took on Beer Batter'd on the hottest day of the year days before the incredible cloud of mosquitos hatched after two straight weeks of rain. The game started with More Cowbell on a roll scoring six runs with five hits and two walks and only getting one out. Beer Batter'd took their turn and answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Two innings later, the score remained 6-2 due to great defense on both sides. In the 4th, David led off with a hit and Paul pushed him across the plate before the inning ended. The home was once again held scoreless in the bottom of the frame. The final inning had Shanna hitting a double, Blake sending her home, and David sending Blake home. The More Cowbell defense held a final time, surrendering a final run in the final frame, and secure their fifth win of the season. David gave up know walks and took advantage of the opponent's eagerness to swing at way-inside pitches. Offensive accolades to Scott, Shanna, and Blake for batting a thousand, thanks to Laura for delaying her victory celebration and taking an at-bat for Jessica, and thanks for Erin for subbing for Moose who was busy perpetuating mankinds presence in the space station. More Cowbell has a bye week before the seasonal showdown with Mixed Up. Let's hope all the mosquitos hatch and get their fill of human blood the week we're off.

More Cowbell took on arch-nemesis Mixed Up on a cooler than normal 84 degree July night with larger than normal cloud of mosquitos on hand. The game usually turns on the pitcher's dual and Scott drew an opening walk setting the tone of the game. The cowbell rang twice in the first inning and Mixed Up was kept off the scoreboard until the 2nd inning. The top of the lineup pushed Scott across the plate again in the 3rd and the cowbell "D" kept Mixed Up off the scoreboard until the 4th inning when the home team tied up the game at 3 each. Mixed Up seemingly put the winning run on the board in the bottom of the 5th but Blue still had had a few minutes left on his watch. In the final inning, just like in the movies, Jennifer, Jessica, and Ken loaded the bases. Chris C was put out by a fine liner-snag by Michael on the mound and Ashley hit an FC putting out Jennifer at home. So David strolled to the box with 2 outs, bases loaded, and the game in his hands. Hello game winning 2RBI clutch single! The bottom of the frame had the More Cowbell defense standing where the Mixed Up balls landed and the game ended with More Cowbell having a one run advantage. David won the pitching duel, giving up one less walk than Michael and Greg won the obnoxious fan duel and got under Mixed Up's skin and made them a little unhappy. Coach David will mentor Greg with his supportive communication skills and focus on descriptive not evaluative and problem oriented rather that person oriented communication. More Cowbell ends Mixed Up's two game streak and get within one game of knotting the series at .500. The gauntlet continues next week as 7-1 South of the Border is the next opponent and More Cowbell moves to Thursday nights for the fall season. Steinlager & Foster's flowed, statistics were compared, & all departed w/multiple mosquito bites.

More Cowbell took on Channel 4 News Team on a night the N'Gators chose to support the launch of STS-118 rather that play softball. The heat index dropped 15 degrees down to 90 in time for the early evening game. The light breeze kept the mosquitos at bay as More Cowbell took the expansive field 3. The home defense was stout and kept the visitors off the scoreboard the first 3 innings. More Cowbell scored 5 runs with 8 hits in the first two innings but got shut down in the 3rd with a fine play by 3B who snagged David's liner and doubled off Jessica. The News Team got inspired and put 3 on the board in the 4th and More Cowbell answered and matched the 3 runs in the next two innings with RBI hits from Shanna, David, and Scott. Channel 4 scooped the home team with 6 runs in the next two innings with plenty of help from defensive errors. More Cowbell found themselves behind for the first time in the game in the final frame, and went to bat down by 1. Jessica, Ken, and Ashley set the table for David with 3 straight hits. David finally connected with his old men's league bat, "Sheena" and burned the left center fielder for a back-to-back game winning 2 RBI drive. Blue Stars go to Scott for hitting his 5th HR, a new team season record; to Amy who loves field 3 and sent three drives to deep left, one of which was somehow caught; to Ken who once again got the key hit when the team was down in the last frame and scored the winning run; to Chris C who fired the ball back to the infield and lowered the big opposing lefties' slugging average; to Jessica who could not be denied and went 4 for 4; and to David who has only given up one walk this year, and none this season. The playoffs begin next week after two cancelations due to rain and the impending fall season. May the cowbell ring often and the playoff run extend over night.
