The More Cowbell era finally started after three postponements. Sporting their brand new
More Cowbell t-shirts and ringing their new cowbell, the home team didn't get enough hits
and gave up to many bases to fall to the Scappers, who have now beaten us twice in a row.
The stats indicate a decent game but the visitors must have put up the 700/800/900 numbers on us. Andy returned
from the disabled list, Scott and Blake put up some great offensive numbers and Tracie filled in for the napping
Moose still recovering from her flight from Russia. David gave up no walks but plenty of basehits. Kevin pitched
the final inning of a hot muggy evening and gave up three walks for five bases and pushed both runs across the
plate. Scott got Kevin out of more trouble with a fine double play but the hometeam bats remained silent in the
final frame and More Cowbell conceded the win. If Katrina allows us to play next week,
we should have less hot humid air, less scratchy laundered shirts, and a greater fever to win . . . and we all know
the prescription.

More Cowbell took the field on a muggy evening after watching the news of the
Hurricane Katrina/New Orleans disaster. Blue Screen of Death had trouble making outs,
only recording eight in a four inning game while the home team played outstanding defense, surrendering only one
run in the final inning. The visitor's pourous defense allowed the majority of the home team to sweeten their
batting stats and almost sent the slugging average over 1000. Kevin pitched the final two innings and gave up one walk for one base which was promptly
doubled-off in the next at bat. Kevin has given up four walks for six bases in four innings and David has gone
six innings with no freebies. More Cowbell has grabbed one walk for one base for the
season. During the game, the price of gas went up 35 cents to over $3/gallon, in honor of Katrina. |

More Cowbell took the field against long time foe N'Gators
on a high mosquito, low humidy September evening. David was feeling lazy, and possessing a cooler full of
iced-down, delicious, 65th Anniversary Lone Star Tall Boys, allowed Kevin to start the game as pitcher and
sent Andy to right-center so he could enjoy the delicious home-town pilsner while riding the pine.
Kevin could stay as long as he didn't walk two batters in an inning and Kevin pitched the whole night.
Kevin gave up one walk for one base and the team received the same. Shelly played the other half of the
battery and battered she was. She took a foul tip right in the mouth in the 4th inning and busted her
lip inside and out. She sat out the rest of the inning and the final but being a trooper, played right
in the 5th and batted one more time in her spot. Other than that excitement, the rest of the game featured
strong defense and strong offense. The team bettered the season's batting, on-base, and slugging averages.
Moose batted a thousand and Kim and Chris B got extra base hits. Kim drove in a game high 4 RBIs.
Pitching stats has Kevin giving up five walks for seven bases in ten innings while David has gone
six innings with no freebies. Next week is our rematch with the 3-0 Scrappers
who gave us our first loss. Let's knock their record in the mouth next week . . . sorry, Shelly. |

One rainout and the two week celebration of the first Houston hurricane (Rita) in 22 years put a three week hold
on wednesday coed softball. More Cowbell took the mosquito laden field against
the summer season champ Chicks & Sticks on, hopefully, the last hot and humid wednesday
night of 2005. The long layoff and weather conditions took a greater toll on the home team who was able to
dramatically drop More Cowbell's batting and slugging averages, but coughed up four
ROEs and two walks to Scott, one of which Scott later stole home in a rundown. Scott hit a ground rule double
in his first at bat that would have been triple and could have been a homerun, limiting his slugging average to
a paltry 1.615. Blake had a great offensive night going 4 for 4, driving in four runs, and scoring twice.
Jennifer, Chris C, Andy, and Eva made some key defensive catches. Donna made her first appearance of the season,
reaching base after bad throws to second for David, and later scoring twice. David lost his 1000 batting average
but held on to the 1000 on-base average and gave up no walks, maintaining goal 2 for the season (no walks allowed).
Pitching stats has Kevin giving up five walks for seven bases in ten innings while David has gone eleven innings
with no freebies. Thanks to Big Ballaz's Eva for filling in for Michelle who was home
tutoring her son for college. Good news, all six rainout/postponements have been rescheduled for a season
stretching to, and ending, November 16th. After that, it is thanksgiving and the two month holiday hold.

The titans of Wednesday Coed Softball had their seasonal face-off within a cloud of
mosquitos on an overly warm and humid evening. Undefeated Mixed Up
versus one loss More Cowbell in a game that usually decides the
season's champion. Of the last 15 seasons, More Cowbell's past teams
have taken eight titles while Mixed Up has taken five.
There have been twelve prior meetings between the two teams and More
Cowbell holds a slim 6W-5L-1T advantage. After that big setup, More
Cowbell batted first and picked up one run after a lead off Scott triple.
Mixed Up batted next and put up a crooked 5 in the first frame after
a costly outfield error. After that, the More Cowbell defense
tightened up an allowed no more runs to score. Scott examplified that effort by making a
diving stop behind second for a nice bruise. The offense
manufactured runs in four of six innings and Kevin drove in the game winning run on a SAC fly
that plated Kim in a pileup at homeplate in which she avoided nothing but the tag. Two more
runs in the 6th added some insurance that wasn't needed as Mixed Up's
Michael was kept in check all night. Moose and Crash made sure of that. Donna even coaxed the
first walk out of home team's
pitcher in last four matchups helping David capture a rare win in the seasonal pitching dual
between the two teams. David added an exclamation point to his pitching performance by
catching a line drive straight to the mound as he remembered to keep his eyes open. The walks
and bases are now even with five walks for seven bases both given and taken for the season.
More Cowbell is now in 2nd place with a rematch of 1st place Scrappers
in three weeks. Win out and add a nineth trophy to the cyberspace mantle. |

More Cowbell faced N'Gators
on a cool 80 degree evening with radios blaring the Astros 3-0 lead over the Cardinals in the NLCS game 6.
Kevin started the game and faced only six batters going into the 3rd inning with a 5-0 lead. A two-base
walk and a couple hits later, Kevin handed the ball to David with a 5-3 lead. Not happy with securing
a save, David coughed up his first walk of the season and five more runs, including a key 2RBI blast
by Michelle Kocen, and let the N'Gators take an 8-6 lead into the gift
seventh inning. A fly-out and a fielder's choice later, David, Shelly, and Kevin had loaded the bases
with two outs and down by two. That is when Sally "Pujols" Bond stepped up to the plate. The
N'Gators pitcher elected not to walk her and threw a pitch right over the
middle of the plate. Sally hurled her bat at the ball and hit a hard grounder to 2nd. As David was
running to home, the 2nd baseman didn't quite field the ball properly, hurried her throw, and threw it
past the first baseman. In the scramble for the ball, Shelly crossed homeplate as Kevin rounded third
on his way home and beat the tag for the go ahead run. Crash then singled, Donna walked, and
Scott drove in Sally and Crash for two more insurance runs giving More Cowbell
a 3 run lead heading to the final at bat for the home team. David gave up a lead-off single but a
Scott-to-Shelly double play cleared the bases, allowing Kim to race out to shallow right field and
track down the final fly-ball-out for the win. Kevin and David both gave up a 2 base walk while the
team received 2BB for 2 bases giving the team 7BB for 9 bases for the season while handing out 7BB for
11 bases to our opponents. The teams adjourned to the stands and coolers and celebrated as the Astros
defeated the Cardinals and secured their first ever trip in 44 years to the World Series to face the
White Sox who haven't been since 1959 or won since 1917. Next week's Happy Hour

Fall and the time change greated Wednesday Coed softball with an evening almost
as cold as the Astros bats in the World Series. The ladies of More Cowbell
came out for Happy Hour and indulged heavily on base hits and RBIs. Jennifer,
Shelly, and Ashley pounded out 1000 slugging averages and Moose and Kim emptied the bases for 5 RBIs
and 2 scores. Jennifer ran down a liner to shallow left center and Kim assisted in shutting down any
hope for an outfield fly ball hit. Starter Kevin had secured the win by the end of the second inning
and handed the ball to David with a 5 run lead. David started his appearance with a two pitch strikeout
and worked a three inning save. Scott was jinxed by talk of his impending best batting average for a
season and then hit into two fielder's choices to 2nd. David's record of
25 for 27 in the 2000
Summer season may stand after all. The fourth inning was interrupted by a Lincoln Navigator blowing
a tire, losing control, smashed into the ditch, and rolled over just beyond right-center field. The
drunken driver probably hit the curb which caused the blowout. Batters in the last two innings were
blinded by over 20 vehicles flashing their blue and reds spread out across the entire outfield. Kevin
allowed two ladies to walk to 1st base in the second while More Cowbell received
four walks for seven bases bringing the season total to 11BB for 16 bases while handing out 9BB for 13
bases to our opponents. Congrats to Ashley, Chris B, and Blake who all got engaged since their last
appearance at Gilruth. Earlier in the evening, the undefeated Scrappers took
a loss setting up next week's matchup as the season's championship game. |

The Wednesday coed softball championship game between 6-1
More Cowbell and 6-1 Scrappers played out on a muggy
November night with two key players missing from the More Cowbell lineup.
Tracie and Elena agreed to fill in for Moose and Jennifer and were witnesses to an workman-like hitting
clinic by the Scrappers' bats. Each home team batter seemed to go 3 for 4
with the guys grabbing extra bases every other at bat. Their power outfield setup limited
More Cowbell to only two extra base hits with one occurring due to an injury on the
play. The More Cowbell defense was way too tense and coughed up a few unearned runs
in the first two innings. More Cowbell played well but needed a perfect game to take
the W. The Scrappers got pretty close, spotting the visitors a few runs after obtaining a
big lead. Chris B gets a blue star for his clutch 3RBI double and scoring twice. Scott plated Chris B
both times and tried to stretch out an extra score but got tagged out by his former volleyball teammate, Amanda,
at the plate. David went 3 for 3 and broke up the shutout in the 4th by driving in Chris C. David gave up
no walks in 4 innings. Kevin did the same in the final frame bringing the season total to 12BB for 18 bases
taken while handing out 9BB for 13 bases to our opponents. Andy showed, but limited his action to scouting out
weaknesses in the hometeam defense, of which there weren't many. The silver lining of the evening was the addition
of Elena to the roster as she got two hits and made several outs in right field. The true championship
game occurs next week at 8pm as 7-1 Mixed Up takes on 7-1 Scrappers in
the final game of the year. Best of luck to Mixed Up as they try to deny the
Scrappers from etching their name on the short list of wednesday coed champions.
The season and softball for 2005 concludes at 6pm versus 4-4 Big Ballaz and "fellas, I'm telling you - you're
gonna want that cowbell!" (Bruce Dickinson, 1976)
|
Game 9 vs Big Ballaz - November 16th, 2005, 6PM. Win - Forfeit - Record 7-2
Alas, Big Ballaz forfeit and we lose our chance to sweeten our batting stats
plus lose the bad taste of that final game. Speaking of which, the Scrappers
defeat Mixed Up later that evening for the championship in a non-sporting,
in-your-face competition that won't soon be forgotten. Hopefully, the Scrappers
will find other recreational leagues to be overly competitive and boost their fragile egos at other people's
expense. The Scrappers championship marks only the third time in 16 seasons that
someone other than More Cowbell-ancestral teams or Mixed Up
have won. The final game of the year, the Battle of the Oh-fers, had Blue Screen of Death
getting off the schneid, and leaving Happy Hour as the only winless team.
