With the sixteen week offseason over, More Cowbell finally got to take the field again since their last contest which ended with a loss. The spring 2006 season brings forth three new opponents, of which Space Monkeys, a team of coops, is the first faced. It is good to face the coops early in the season. They can hit and they can run, they just can't catch until they get a few games under the belt. More Cowbell took advantage of this and put up three run-ruled innings and only took eleven outs in five innings played. Six starters had as many or more bases than at-bats. Blake started with two doubles, Scott hit a homerun, Jennifer hit the fence with long drive, and both Chris B & Chris C went 4 for 4. Valori made her first start and came up big with the bases loaded, driving in two runs. David pitched three no-walk innings and only misplayed a hard hit grounder off his shin. He then gave the ball to his older brother, a future softball hall of famer from the 1980s. Jerry hadn't played since 1992. He still had the reflexes but not the legs. Taking an at-bat before pitching tightened up his legs and hindered his bunt fielding. He did snag a liner up the middle and doubled off the man at first, showing off the old form that made him great. More Cowbell pitchers gave up no walks while the More Cowbell batters collected five for six bases. A big thank you to Christy B who subbed in, made some outfield catches and scored three times. Next week, we renew the rivalry with old, familiar foe Mixed Up and set the tone for the rest of the season.

The second oldest active coed softball rivalry (17 games) was renewed on a cool, windy night with More Cowbell enjoying a two win streak over Mixed Up, only the second time consecutive wins have been mustered against the visitors. Mixed Up was held to only 1 run in the first two frames and David drove in Benson and Shanna to take the lead. Two innings later, great base running from Ashley and Shanna had the game tied once again. Mixed Up grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth setting up the top of the order for the triumphant, come-from-behind victory. With Jennifer on 1st with one out, Blake dealt the seemingly knockout blow to right, but a fine running catch by position 10 stunned the home team. The inning ended quickly enough for another, possibly undeserved frame, but the disappointment lingered. David sent the Manassas No-Free-Passes, Mark Huffman out to the mound to mix up the pitch delivery to the Mixed Up batters. But after giving up a base hit, Mark conceded the pitching dual victory to the visiting team by giving up a lady walk. That completely took the wind out of the More Cowbell sails and the defense collapsed like the Texans against an ivy league quarterback. Fielding errors forced More Cowbell to cough-up a run-ruled inning. The team still had spirit and equaled their output of the prior five innings but it wasn't enough and Mixed Up brought their losing streak to an end. This matchup always comes down to who makes the fewest mistakes and Mixed Up capitalized tonight. The fact that Scott didn't get to second base until the final inning was the key stat of the night. Thanks to Shanna for subbing and shutting down the right side of field defensively. Christy B and Shanna may just upgrade to starter in the coming weeks. Guess what!? I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.

More Cowbell faced the Not So Incredibles on a cool, long-sleeve-shirt kinda night. More Cowbell demonstrated their uncommonly stingy defense the first five innings of the game, limiting the vistors to only three runs. But after watching the Not So Incredibles display their namesake defense for those five innings, the home team joined in on the fun and gave up four runs in the final frame. Chris B's strong batting in prior games moved him up to third in the lineup and he expressed his desire to stay their with another fine batting performance. Scott reminded everyone why he is the slugging champ of the team and only needed one at bat to get the HR for the cycle. And this was after he mentioned he might need a pinch runner for the evening. Shanna did require a pinch runner after a defensive play in the 2nd tightened up her legs. She was still able to get two hits and walk to first after the injury. Christie M made her first appearance on the team and pitched in with rbis and runs scored and pinch-ran for Shanna. David gave up no walks while the team took one for two bases, bringing the season total to six walks taken for eight bases and one walk given for one base. Next week, we take on the undefeated N'Gators who put a 20-0 beatdown on the hapless Bad News Bears. This will be the 19th matchup between these two teams, the most of any team versus More Cowbell current and past teams.

More Cowbell and N'Gators took the field and faced each other for the 19th time on a rainy and cool night that somehow had Blue yell, "Play ball!" A different lineup took the field as David took Scott's place at shortstop after Scott's season ending injury last Thursday had him in the hospital with a broken jaw. Jerry, the old master from the 1980's, came out of retirement and took the mound. With Scott and Moose out for the moment, Chris Benson ascends to the oldest and most grizzled veteran of team, besides David, whose glove is older than most of his teammates. Chris showed his grizzled-ness and went oh-fer tonight but did drive in a sacrifice run. His stellar three prior game performance still kept him up on top of the batting ratings but Blake made a bid for the top spot with a 3-for-3 outing and a triple. Jennifer led off in place of Scott and showed why with a 3-for-3 performance with a walk, RBI, and a run scored. Ashley doubled her hit total and drove in a run. Jerry showed off the old stuff with no walks and a couple of K's. David technically didn't have any errors at short but a younger guy probably would have made 2-3 more plays. The Greif brothers went 6-for-6 for 8 bases, their best outing in 15 years. The team played well and won despite one error plagued inning in 4th. Thanks to Tracie for subbing in and best of luck to Scott for a full recovery and a quick return to his place at short wearing the More Cowbell jersey while pushing the team slugging record to new highs.

Last week's rainout was rapidly made-up in a first ever, next week, rainout makeup doubleheader. More Cowbell was on bye week and had made other plans when the news came forth and the captain had to scramble for substitutes. Six ladies and four guys took the field and faced Bad News Bears on the wide open space of Field One. The visitors had just won their first game of the season and were looking to double the tally. More Cowbell had trouble adjusting to non-kitty-litter infield and helped the upstart visitors take a five to two lead. Tightened defense held the teams to one run each over the next three innings. With time running out, the More Cowbell top of the lineup brought out their bats in a final bid for victory. Blake reached base safely but didn't make it to second on Jennifer's FC. Chris Benson, looking to leadoff next week, put an exclamation point on his 3 for 3 night by driving Jennifer home with a double and getting to third on the throw home. Shanna hit a SAC fly that was dropped, plating Chris and putting her on first. Chris Carmona then matched Benson's shot and drove in Shanna with a double. Ashley moved Chris to third on a 1-3 grounder. Aimee (replaced Andy who snuck off to the Astros game) promptly hit a drive off the shortstop's glove (her only drop of the night), and beat the throw to first as Chris scored the go ahead run. The visitors got their first man on base but the next three went down in order as More Cowbell stole a win. David lost his perfect season with an F7 after 11 straight hits but kept his no walk string going. He also made more plays from the mound than he had done in a year. Thanks to Christie, Tracie, and Aimee who helped us field a team on short notice. Next week's 6pm game has already been canceled and moved out to 9pm for another doubleheader on April 26th. We get four 9pm games and zero 6pm games this year. The Gilruth didn't want David to pitch batting practice beforehand apparently.

With a party and power outage behind them, the mighty More Cowbell finally took the field again on a most pleasant 70 degree evening. The Scrappers have enjoyed a three game winning streak (matched only by Mixed Up) but face a fully loaded More Cowbell who send all 10 starters to field for the first time this season. Moose and Scott, still recovering from a broken jaw only six weeks ago, were heartily welcomed back to team and took their place at the top of the lineup once again. And just like old times, they scored six runs off of six hits between them. Chris, Shanna, and Blake batted them in and the rest of the team put forth a strong, workman-like defensive effort and shut down the Scrappers substantial offensive threat. Scott and Moose both showed their fresh legs by tracking down flies deep into the outfield and Ashley made a great tag at home of Sub-of-the-Year Tracie. David holds on to his dream of zero walks in a season and even snuck a final pitch just beyond the plate for a called strikeout final out. The 9pm game was canceled due to an ambulance required injury on field 1. The season is concluded next week with a 6pm/7pm double header, our first 6pm game of the season. Mixed Up takes the spring championship a week early with tonight's win, their eighth championship in 23 seasons.

More Cowbell and Big Ballaz finally meet up after multiple cancelations for the early game on an expansive Field 3. The ladies were treated to pre-game batting practice and it helped as Ashley and Valori ran up and down the base paths. Valori doubled her hit count for the year and drove in two runs with blasts to the outfield. Blake was given the nod over Chris B and just edged him out in the O-stats. But Chris C was the man who should have been in three spot as he was 3 for 3 and scored each time he had an at-bat. David somehow had a good game inspite of only four hours of sleep after celebrating after his cost management final the night prior. He gave up no walks keeping the dream alive for a perfect season. Thanks to Carla for filling in for the night-shifting Moose. Next door on Field 2, Mixed Up drop their perfect season but still take the crown with the head-to-head victory. Thanks for the extra salt.

The season concludes with More Cowbell facing the overmatched Dream Catchers in the 2nd game of an early doubleheader. The home team presented many opportunties for padding batting stats and More Cowbell was happy to accept. Shanna, Chris C, and David batted a thousand and grabbed a couple extra bases along the way. Scott batted the cycle for the second time (5/14/03) of only three (7/12/00) in the team history. Scott also pushed the season slugging average even further out of reach with a jaw popping 1.636 average, topping his old Summer 2005 record. David made a little history himself by executing only the second ever .900 batting average (7/26/00) and completed an entire season (35 of 43 total innings) without surrendering a walk. Jerry also gave up no walks (7 of 43 total innings) and poor Mark coughed up the only one for one base while the team enjoyed 13 for 17 bases. Blue stars for Jennifer, Blake, Chris B, Chris C, and David for perfect attendance. Scott would have gotten one too if he stayed home and watched CSI on Thursday nights. Both teams got several silent foul balls from a benevolent 'Blue' for extra chances of putting double wall aluminum to ball. Amy joined as a 6th batter, passed the audition, and will be a new starter for the summer season. A fine season in every regard other than the one loss that kept us out of first place for the third season in a row. There's only one prescription, and it's More Cowbell!
